Modern literature studies works produced throughout the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment and to the end of the Baroque period. Elements of modernism in literature include:

• works focusing more on psychology, comparative religion and sociology,
• global warfare,
• emergence of "city consciousness,"
• new technologies such as radio and cinema, and
• "end of the century" consciousness.
